Pearls


Pearls are perhaps the best-loved gems of all time. Perfect shining spheres, warm to the touch, Pearls are simply and purely organic. They occur in a wide variety of colors, from the most familiar white and cream ones, to a palette of colors extending to every hue.

People have desired natural Pearls as symbols of wealth and status for thousands of years. A Chinese historian recorded the oldest written mention of natural Pearls in 2206 BC. As the centuries progressed toward modern times, desire for natural Pearls remained strong. Members of royal families as well as wealthy people around the world, treasured natural Pearls and passed them from generation to generation.

Pearls are treasures from the Earth’s ponds, lakes, seas, and oceans, and they’ve always embodied the mystery, power, and life-sustaining nature of water.
The spherical shape of some led many cultures to associate this gem with the moon. In ancient China, Pearls were believed to guarantee protection from fire and fire-breathing dragons. In Europe, they symbolized modesty, chastity, and purity. Pearls were once thought to be the tears of the gods. 

The increased demand for Pearls has led to their cultivation in large quantities. Cultured pearls are not an imitation, but a natural product which has been produced with human assistance. Today cultured Pearls amount to 90% of the total pearl trade. 
The first steps toward culturing occurred in China in 13th century, while Japanese pioneers successfully produced whole cultured pearls in 1920.

The derivation of the name pearl is uncertain, but may be from a type of shell (Latin- perna) or from its spherical shape (Latin-Sphaerula).

Pearls are beneficial for lung diseases and help reduce allergies. They aid in the treatment of stomach aches, bronchitis, colds and lung infections. They promote, sound sleep, prevent nerve disorders and nerve weakness, as can be used to prevent and overcome fatigue. Pearls promote the regeneration of new cells and make the skin smooth, fine, elastic and healthy.
